AGE SPOTS / PIGMENTATION

WHAT ARE AGE SPOTS / HYPERPIGMENTATION?
Age spots, also referred to as brown spots, liver spots, sun spots, or lentigos are flat patches of pigmented (coloured) skin. '
They tend to appear in those aged over 40 years, but can occur much earlier in those who spend a lot of time in the sun.
Age spots are harmless, although they can appear very ageing as they disrupt the 'even' tone naturally present in younger, undamaged skin.
WHAT CAUSES AGE SPOTS / PIGMENTATION?
'Typically, 'age-spots' / hyperpigmentation are caused by UVA rays (sunlight). Sunlight stimulates cells within our skin called 'melanocytes' to produce more melanin - this is responsible for giving people their colour and producing a tan. For example, dark-skinned people have naturally higher levels of melanin in their skin than lighter-skinned people.
AGE SPOTS ARE HARMLESS. HOWEVER, ANY NEW DISCOLOURATION - ESPECIALLY IF IT IS VERY DARK, RAISED, WITH UNEVEN EDGES AND / OR LARGER THAN 2.5MM IN DIAMETER OUGHT TO BE ASSESSED BY YOUR OWN GENERAL PRACTITIONER.
HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?
Age spots / hyperpigmentation respond very well to a course of CHEMICAL PEELS, as this helps to resurface the top layers of the skin, revealing a softer, more even toned, smoother skin.
Medical grade skincare products - such as THERADERM ENLIGHTEN SKIN BRIGHTENER which contains Kojic acid and L-Arbutin can help to reduce discolouration associated with sun exposure and sun damage, brightening the skin without irritation.
