JAW SLIMMING / JAWLINE REDUCTION TEATMENT FAQ'S
WHAT IS A JAWLINE REDUCTION?
A JAW REDUCTION treatment involves using anti-wrinkle (botox) injections to reduce the width of the jaw, thereby making the jaw slimmer and more V-shaped. This treatment can also help with teeth grinding, by reducing the 'power' and weakening the associated muscles.
Due to the treatment's ability to treat a range of cosmetic and medical concerns, the treatment is also referred to as masseter treatment, jaw reduction, and teeth grinding treatment for bruxism.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?
If you have a wide set jaw, and would prefer a softer, more rounded, V shape jawline, then a JAWLINE REDUCTION treatment may be suitable for you.
If you grind your teeth, especially at night (bruxism), a JAW REDUCTION treatment will also help prevent this.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Daily habits such as grinding our teeth at night, or clenching our jaw, can lead to the jaw muscles (masseter muscles) becoming enlarged (hypertrophic) over time, leading to the appearance of a more square shape, wider jaw. Many people like this appearance, and indeed it is desirable for some and can be achieved using dermal fillers (see JAWLINE AUGMENTATION). However, if grinding the teeth (bruxism) is a concern, and / or one would prefer a slimmer, more V-shape jawline (especially in females) then this can be achieved using a JAW REDUCTION treatment. Anti-wrinkle injections (botox), whilst known and used widely for their ability to treat frown lines and crows feet, can also be injected into the masseter muscles to relax them; therefore reducing the width and squareness of the jaw whilst reducing bruxism (teeth grinding).
HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Effects will be noticeable anywhere from 3-10 days following treatment, with full effects at 14 days.
Improvement in bruxism / teeth grinding / a square jawline will be apparent after just one treatment. However, keeping on top of the treatment and having a re-treatment every 3-6 months will continue to further reduce the size and bulk of the masseter muscles, resulting in an ever improving and longer-lasting result over time.
HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS LAST?
The effects of botox typically last between 3-4 months.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Around 30 minutes.
IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?
The treatment involves tiny needles, and is typically not at all painful.
IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD - OR SHOULDN'T DO - PRIOR TO THE TREATMENT?
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
- Do not take Ibuprofen for 24 hours before your appointment
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY TREATMENT?
The treated areas may be slightly pink and / or 'bumpy' for around an hour following injection.
WHAT ABOUT ANY RISKS?
A JAW REDUCTION is very safe when injected by experienced medical professionals. The main risks are associated with the injections - pinprick redness and pinprick bleeding (both of which resolve very quickly),and possible small transitory bumps . There is a small risk of pinprick bruising. Your medical practitioner will further discuss all risks and side effects.
ARE THERE ANY PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?
You cannot have a JAWLINE REDUCTION if:
You are pregnant
You are breastfeeding
You are taking certain antibiotics
You have any chronic muscle or nerve conditions, such as Eaton Lambert syndrome, myasthenia gravis, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
You have any sensitivity to any of the product excipients - human albumin or lactose monohydrate
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
A JAWLINE REDUCTION uses botulinum toxin, which is prescription only. Therefore, if this is your first visit to us you MUST have a consultation at least a day before your treatment to ensure the treatment is safe and suitable for you.
