WHAT CAUSES FROWN LINES?
Frown lines - otherwise referred to as '11's' - develop slowly over time. Whenever we move our face, muscles contract to make that movement, so if you frown a lot, you are likely to get frown lines earlier than someone who doesn't! Nevertheless, the natural progression of age, loss of collagen and elastin, thinning of the skin . . . combined with environmental and lifestyle factors all lead to the creation of frown lines that become deeper and more ingrained over time.
When these lines only occur on movement (actively frowning) they are referred to as 'dynamic' lines. When they are present even at rest, they are known as 'static' lines'. Most people over the age of 30 years have both static and dynamic frown lines.
HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?
Frown lines respond fantastically to ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS.
In the case of fine-to-moderate frown lines, with minimal static show at rest, anti-wrinkle injections offer an immediate and long-lasting improvement. Even for those with moderate-to-severe (deep) frown lines, anti-wrinkle injections will greatly improve both the dynamic and static appearance from the very first treatment, although to completely erase moderate-to-deep static frown lines can take several months. Essentially, if the muscles that create the frown / 11's are kept 'frozen' for a long period of time, they atrophy (thin - imagine what would happen to your calf muscle if your leg was kept in a cast). When this happens, even the deepest frown lines begin to essentially 'unfold' and disappear.
Anti-wrinkle injections are the gold standard, first line treatment fro frown lines. In the case of mild-to-moderate frown lines, a CHEMICAL PEEL may help the appearance of the static frown lines (but will not lessen the appearance of dynamic lines).
NOTE: some clinics and / or practitioners will advise and try to treat this area with dermal filler. DERMAL FILLER should NEVER be used to 'fill' frown lines. All frown lines are created by movement of the muscle. If you knock that muscle out, you will improve the lines. DERMAL FILLER in the glabellar region (frown lines) is at best, highly unsatisfactory due to the lack of subcutaneous fat in the forehead region, and will appear lumpy, bumpy, and can even migrate. At worst, dermal filler in this area can lead to arterial occlusion due to the anatomy of this area which can result in blindness.
Anti-wrinkle injections are very safe, and carry none of the risks associated with DERMAL FILLER in the forehead.
