MEDICALLY LED CARDIFF

Pigmentation treatment in Cardiff

Melasma, sun damage and uneven skin tone - corrected with a medically-led approach, assessed and prescribed by a medical practitioner

Pigmentation is one of the most common — and most stubborn — skin concerns we see. Whether it's melasma, sun spots, age spots or the marks left behind after a breakout, uneven skin tone can make the complexion look tired and older than it is. At Sebastian Rose, pigmentation is assessed and treated by a prescribing medical practitioner.

THE TYPES WE TREAT

Melasma

Hormone driven patches

HOVER TO VIEW

Melasma — Larger, symmetrical patches, often across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Frequently triggered or worsened by hormones (pregnancy, the pill, HRT) and heat, which makes it the most treatment-sensitive type and the one that most benefits from a medically supervised plan.

Sun & age spots

Defined brown marks from cumulative sun exposure

Sun spots & age spots — Small, well-defined brown marks from years of cumulative UV exposure, typically on the face, chest and backs of the hands.

Post acne marks

Pigment left behind after breakouts or inflammation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — The marks left behind after acne, injury or inflammation. More common — and more persistent — in deeper skin tones.

Uneven tone

Dull, blotchy sun damage with lost evenness

General sun damage & uneven tone — A dull, blotchy, "weathered" appearance from photodamage, where no single spot stands out but the overall evenness has been lost.

Our Approach

Pigmentation responds best to a layered plan, not a single product. Your treatment is led by a prescribing practitioner and usually combines:

A prescriber-led, medical-grade skincare regimen

In-clinic peels, medical microneedling & skin boosters

Daily SPF & long-term protection to keep results

MEDICAL-GRADE SKINCARE FOR PIGMENTATION

The right home regimen does much of the heavy lifting between clinic visits. We stock the brightening and corrective ranges from Obagi Medical and Jan Marini — vitamin C, retinoids, exfoliating acids and targeted brightening complexes — chosen for their clinical evidence in improving uneven tone.

Some of the most effective options are prescription-only and aren't sold openly online; these are arranged after a consultation so your regimen is matched to your skin and used safely. The products below are available to shop now — and if you're unsure what suits your pigmentation type, take our online skin consultation and - if approved, you will gain access to prescriptive products.

Understanding pigmentation

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to areas where the skin produces excess melanin, creating darker patches, spots or an overall uneven tone. It can appear anywhere, but the face, neck, chest and hands are most often affected because they see the most sun. Because pigmentation develops at different depths in the skin, the right treatment depends entirely on the type — which is why an in-person assessment matters before any product or treatment is recommended.

Why pigmentation happens

Several factors drive excess melanin, and most cases are a combination:

UV exposure — the single biggest cause, and the reason daily SPF is non-negotiable if you want results to last.

Hormones — pregnancy, oral contraception and HRT can switch on melasma.

Inflammation — acne, picking, or aggressive treatments can leave lasting marks.

Genetics & skin tone — some people are simply more prone, and deeper skin tones are more susceptible to PIH.

Ageing — slower cell turnover lets old, pigmented cells linger at the surface.

Understanding the trigger is half the treatment — addressing the cause is what stops new pigmentation forming while we fade the existing marks.

Our approach to treating pigmentation

Pigmentation responds best to a layered plan, not a single product. At Sebastian Rose, your treatment is led by a prescribing medical practitioner and usually combines:

A prescriber-led skincare regimen — medical-grade actives chosen for your pigmentation type, with prescription-strength options

In-clinic treatments — chemical peels, medical microneedling and regenerative skin boosters to accelerate cell turnover and target pigment the surface alone can't reach.

Long-term protection — daily SPF and maintenance, because pigmentation management is as much about preventing the next mark as fading the last.

Results with pigmentation are gradual and built over weeks to months — there is no overnight fix, and anyone who promises one should be treated with caution. What we offer is a realistic, medically sound plan with visible, lasting improvement.

Why choose a medically-led clinic

Pigmentation — melasma especially — can be made worse by the wrong treatment. Aggressive products or unsuitable devices can trigger more pigment, particularly in deeper skin tones. At Sebastian Rose, your skin is assessed and prescribed for by an NMC-registered Independent Nurse Prescriber with over 20 years of clinical experience, so your plan is both effective and safe. It's the difference between chasing dark spots and actually correcting them.

Pigmentation treatment FAQs

Can pigmentation be removed completely?

Most pigmentation can be significantly faded and managed, but "permanent removal" isn't a realistic claim — especially with melasma, which is prone to returning if the triggers (sun, hormones, heat) aren't controlled. A good plan reduces the appearance of existing pigmentation and helps prevent new marks forming.

How long does it take to see results?

Pigmentation improves gradually. Most people start to notice changes within 6–12 weeks of consistent treatment, with continued improvement over several months. Consistency and daily SPF are what make the results stick.

What's the best treatment for melasma?

There's no single answer — melasma is best managed with a tailored combination of medical-grade skincare and gentle, controlled in-clinic treatments, always under supervision. It's the type of pigmentation most likely to worsen with the wrong approach, which is why a consultation comes first.

Is hydroquinone safe?

Hydroquinone is an effective, well-studied brightening ingredient, but in the UK it's prescription-only and should only be used under the supervision of a prescriber, for a defined period. We'll only recommend it where it's clinically appropriate for you.

Will my pigmentation come back?

It can, particularly with ongoing sun exposure or hormonal triggers. That's why maintenance and daily SPF are built into every plan — protecting your results is part of the treatment, not an afterthought.

Do I need a consultation before buying products?

For our open-shelf skincare, no — you can shop those directly. For prescription-strength options, and for any in-clinic treatment, yes: a consultation lets us match the right approach to your skin safely.
