SEND THEM UP IN SMOKE
WHAT CAUSES SMOKERS LINES?
Perioral lines - otherwise referred to as 'smoker's lines' - develop slowly over time. Whenever we move our face, muscles contract to make that movement, so if you pucker your lips a lot - or smoke - you are likely to get these lines earlier than someone who doesn't! Nevertheless, the natural progression of age, loss of collagen and elastin, thinning of the skin . . . combined with environmental and lifestyle factors all lead to the creation of smoker's lines that become deeper and more ingrained over time. Contrary to popular belief, these lines are not always caused by smoking: non-smokers can and will also develop smokers lines simply due to the natural ageing process.
When these lines only occur on movement (actively puckering the mouth) they are referred to as 'dynamic' lines. When they are present even at rest, they are known as 'static' lines'.
HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?
Smoker's lines respond well to DERMAL FILLER.. Dermal filler is used to fill the lines and 'plump' the area, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance. Results are immediate and last between 6 - 9 months. This is the first line, gold standard treatment for smokers lines.
ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS are a possible alternative to dermal fillers for smoker's lines, and are ideal for those with less ingrained, finer lines. Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used in the area as well as dermal filler in a combination approach, which often works very well indeed.
Another option for finer to moderate smokers lines are CHEMICAL PEELS. The effectiveness of this is dependent upon the depth of the lines alongside the intended result.
