PDO THREAD LIFT FAQ'S
WHAT ARE PDO THREADS?
PDO threads, otherwise referred to as a thread lift, are surgical 'threads' made of polydioxanone (PDO) - the same material of which dissolvable stitches are made. PDO threads are extremely effective, extremely safe, and the product has been used medically for over 40 years.
WHAT DO PDO THREADS DO?
PDO threads are used to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin by providing an internal supportive structure.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PDO THREADS?
A PDO thread lift can:
- Improve skin laxity
- Tighten the skin (pull it 'back')
- Strengthen and restore facial contours
- Improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and folds
- Enhance skin's elasticity
- Brighten the complexion of ageing skin
- Increase your natural production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin in the areas treated which continues to increase over time
- Improve lymph and blood circulation to and from the tissues
- Improve your overall complexion
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH PDO THREADS?
- Nasolabial folds
- Naso jugal folds (deep vertical groove at the bottom of the eye bag and cheek)
HOW DO PDO THREADS WORK?
Once inserted into the skin, PDO threads provide an instant lifting and tightening effect as the skin is 'lifted' by their placement.
As the PDO threads are slowly and naturally absorbed over the next 4-6 months, this process stimulates your body to create more collagen around the threads, resulting in a natural lifted and plumper appearance. This process also stimulates elastin and hyaluronic acid production, the benefits of which are mentioned above.
ARE PDO THREADS SUITABLE FOR ME?
A PDO thread lift is most suitable for:
- People aged over 30 years
- People with skin laxity
- People with sagging to mid-face
- People with sagging to lower face
HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?
You will notice an immediate improvement; the best results will be seen over the next 2-6 weeks once new collagen has been formed around the threads.
HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS OF A THREAD LIFT LAST?
The results of a PDO thread lift typically last 12-18 months +
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Around 45-60 minutes
HOW MANY THREADS DO I NEED?
It depends on your skin, the level of lift required, and the area(s) being treated. This will be fully discussed with you beforehand.
IS THE PROCEDURE ITSELF PAINFUL?
You may feel some slight discomfort, but the treatment should not be painful. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
WHERE IS THE TREATMENT PERFORMED?
We provide our PDO thread lift in Cardiff.
IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULDN'T DO PRIOR TO TREATMENT?
Following a consultation, we will advise you specifically on what is best and safe for you. However, there are some general rules that you can follow where clinically advised, and as long as it is safe for you to do so:
-Avoid taking Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications for 24 prior to your appointment
- Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment
IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD - OR SHOULDN'T DO - FOLLOWING MY TREATMENT?
- Avoid taking vitamin A and vitamin C for ten days following your treatment
- Do not exercise for 24 hours following your treatment
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours following your treatment
- Do not rub or massage the face where the PDO threads have been inserted for 2 weeks following your treatment
- Avoid dental treatment for 2 weeks post procedure if possible
- Sleep on your back for 2-4 weeks following treatment
DO THE PDO THREADS NEED TO BE REMOVED?
No, PDO threads absorb naturally over the next 6 months.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY TREATMENT?
You may feel some slight discomfort after your treatment with PDO threads. This can be managed with post-treatment advice.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO FULLY RECOVER?
A PDO thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure and therefore recovery time is minimal. However, if you do experience any swelling and / or bruising this can take up to a week to settle.
ARE PDO THREADS SAFE?
As PDO threads are made of the exact same material as dissolvable sutures (used for example, in heart surgery), they are extremely safe and are FDA licensed. Hundreds of thousands of PDO thread lifts are performed worldwide every year, with no reports to date of allergic reactions, thread sensitivity, or any serious adverse effects whatsoever.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS?
As with most non-surgical medical aesthetic procedures, the risk of swelling and / or bruising exists. This tends to be minimal and lasts up to one week.
Extremely uncommon risks / side-effects include: asymmetry; threads becoming visible following the procedure; skin dimpling and / or rippling; localised sensitivity and / or numbness in the treated areas (if this does occur, it should resolve within a few weeks); infection.
CAN A PDO THREAD LIFT BE COMBINED WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
Absolutely! PDO threads can be combined with other treatments such as botox and / or dermal fillers. It all depends on the client and what you are looking to achieve.
WILL I NEED A FOLLOW-UP / TOP-UP APPOINTMENT?
Depending on the level of your individual skin laxity and expectations, a follow-up treatment may be required at 6-8 weeks.
ARE THERE ANY PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR A PDO THREAD LIFT?
You cannot have a PDO THREAD LIFT if:
- You are pregnant
- You are breastfeeding
- You are under 18 years of age
- You have an active infection of the skin or are undergoing dental treatment
