MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING —
CARDIFF'S MOST ADVANCED
SKIN REGENERATION CLINIC

Microneedling is a clinically proven collagen induction therapy widely used in medical aesthetics to improve skin quality and regeneration. Supported by multiple clinical studies, it has been shown to stimulate collagen and elastin production through controlled micro-injury, leading to measurable improvements in fine lines, acne scarring, pore size and overall skin texture. Using medical-grade devices, microneedling activates the skin’s natural repair pathways, resulting in firmer, smoother and more resilient skin — not by adding volume, but by restoring function at a cellular level.

WHAT IS MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING?

Medical microneedling is a clinically proven skin treatment that uses a precision device with fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. This triggers the skin's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin from within.

At Sebastian Rose Cardiff, we use advanced medical-grade microneedling systems, allowing us to tailor every treatment to your specific skin concerns, goals and the areas being treated.

The micro-channels created during treatment also allow active ingredients to penetrate far deeper into the skin than topical application alone, dramatically enhancing their effectiveness.

This is why our bespoke add-ons — including exosomes, PRP and polynucleotides — deliver such exceptional results when combined with microneedling.

WHAT DOES MICRONEEDLING TREAT?

Acne Scarring and Post-Acne Marks

Microneedling breaks down fibrotic scar tissue and stimulates new collagen formation, progressively softening depressed acne scars and improving overall skin smoothness over a course of treatments.

Fine Lines and Skin Texture

By stimulating collagen and elastin production, microneedling improves the appearance of fine lines, crepey skin and uneven texture progressively over the weeks following treatment.

Skin Laxity and Loss of Firmness

As collagen and elastin rebuild, the skin tightens and firms naturally — making microneedling particularly effective for mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck and décolletage.

Dullness, Dehydration and Uneven Tone

The combination of collagen stimulation and deep infusion of active ingredients restores radiance, hydration and evenness to tired, dull or sun-damaged skin.

Hair Loss and Scalp Health

Microneedling on the scalp stimulates blood flow and growth factors in the follicles, supporting hair regrowth and scalp health. Particularly effective when combined with PRP or exosomes.

Stretch Marks

Medical microneedling at deeper settings breaks down stretch mark tissue and stimulates new collagen formation, progressively improving the appearance of stretch marks on the body over a course of treatments.

MICRONEEDLING FAQ'S

Is microneedling scientifically proven to work?

Yes. Medical microneedling — also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy — has a substantial and growing body of peer-reviewed clinical evidence behind it. Published research across multiple databases including PubMed demonstrates that microneedling significantly increases baseline collagen types I, III and VII, newly synthesised collagen, and tropoelastin. Studies confirm improvements in acne scarring, skin laxity, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks. A 2024 comprehensive review published in PMC confirmed that microneedling enhances collagen deposition and reorganisation, improves skin texture and elasticity, and promotes neo-vascularisation — the formation of new blood vessels that improve nutrient delivery and support ongoing skin health.

How many sessions will I need and why is it not a one-treatment fix?

Collagen remodelling is a biological process that takes time — it cannot be rushed or completed in a single session. After each treatment, your skin enters a wound-healing cascade that takes weeks to fully play out. For a single glow or special occasion, one treatment can produce a noticeable improvement. For acne scarring, skin laxity, pigmentation or significant texture concerns, research supports a course of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Each session builds on the last — collagen laid down in session one matures and is built upon in session two and three. The cumulative effect is far greater than any single treatment. Maintenance sessions every 8 to 12 weeks then sustain and continue building your results. Anyone promising dramatic results from a single microneedling session for significant skin concerns is not being straightforward with you.

Why shouldn't I just buy a dermaroller from Amazon and do it at home?

This is one of the most important questions in aesthetic skincare right now, given how widely home dermarollers are marketed online. The honest answer is that home microneedling and clinical microneedling are not the same treatment in any meaningful sense. Home dermarollers are legally limited to needle depths of 0.2mm to 0.3mm — a depth that reaches only the very surface of the skin and cannot penetrate the dermis, where collagen is actually produced. At this depth, you are not stimulating collagen. You may be creating superficial skin disruption, but you are not inducing the wound-healing cascade that makes medical microneedling clinically effective. Medical microneedling at Sebastian Rose operates at depths from 0.05mm to 2.0mm — reaching the dermis where fibroblasts live and where genuine collagen induction occurs.

There are also significant safety concerns with home use. Dermarollers accumulate bacteria between the needle tips with repeated use, creating a genuine infection risk every time they are applied. The rolling motion of a dermaroller — as opposed to the stamping motion of a professional pen device — can cause tearing of the skin rather than clean micro-channels, leading to uneven results and potential scarring. Needles on cheap devices also blunt quickly, meaning each subsequent use causes more trauma with less precision. Perhaps most importantly, what you apply to your skin immediately after microneedling goes directly into the bloodstream through the open micro-channels. Many popular home serums, vitamin C products and skincare actives contain ingredients that are perfectly safe on intact skin but were never tested or approved for transdermal delivery at this level. Applying the wrong products through open micro-channels can cause significant reactions, sensitisation and long-term damage.

What about beauty salons and non-medical clinics offering microneedling?

In the UK, microneedling is not currently a regulated procedure (the whole medical aesthetics industry isn't - yet (with the excpetion of Scotland that as of April, 2026, is brining in strict criteria and regulations very, very shortly!) - but thats a whole other story you can read about on our blog)— meaning it can legally be performed by anyone, including beauty therapists with no medical training. This is an important consideration when choosing where to have treatment.

There are two key issues with non-medical microneedling. The first is depth. In practice, non-medically trained practitioners tend to work at conservative depths to minimise risk — often 0.5mm or less. At these depths, you may see some improvement in product absorption and superficial skin quality, but you are unlikely to achieve meaningful collagen induction or improvement in acne scarring or significant skin laxity. Genuine collagen induction for these concerns requires working at depths of 1.0mm to 2.0mm — depths that require clinical judgement and medical training to use safely. The second issue is what is applied during treatment. Clinical-grade actives — including exosomes, PRP, polynucleotides and Botox microinfusion — can only be used legally by trained medical professionals. These are the add-ons that make the most significant difference to outcomes.

At Sebastian Rose, all microneedling is performed by GMC / NMC-registered medical practitioners. This is not a marketing statement — it determines the depth we can safely work at, the actives we can legally use, and the clinical decisions we can make during your treatment.

Why don't you offer radiofrequency microneedling (RF microneedling)?

RF microneedling — devices like Morpheus8 — combine microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered deep into the skin. It is a legitimate and effective treatment for certain concerns, particularly significant skin laxity on areas like the abdomen. However, we have a specific reason for not offering RF microneedling on the face — and it is a clinical one. The radiofrequency energy in these devices heats and causes controlled damage to the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the skin. On the body, reducing subcutaneous fat can be desirable. On the face, it is not. Facial fat — including the fat pads that give the face its natural volume and contour — is one of the primary structural supports of a youthful appearance. Losing facial fat is one of the key drivers of an aged appearance.

There is growing concern in aesthetic medicine about the long-term facial volume consequences of repeated RF microneedling on the face, particularly in younger patients who do not yet have fat to spare. For genuine skin tightening and collagen induction on the face, medical microneedling combined with regenerative add-ons including exosomes, PRP and polynucleotides produces outstanding results without any risk to facial fat architecture. For body laxity concerns, RF microneedling may well be appropriate.

Does microneedling hurt?

A topical numbing cream is applied 20 to 30 minutes before treatment, making the procedure very well tolerated by most patients. At superficial depths, most people describe a mild vibration or scratching sensation. At deeper settings for acne scarring or significant skin concerns, there may be more sensation in areas of thinner skin — your practitioner will discuss this with you and adjust as needed throughout the treatment.

Is there downtime after microneedling?

This depends on the depth of treatment. At lighter settings for glow and skin quality, redness typically resolves within 12 to 24 hours and most patients return to normal activities the same day. At deeper settings for acne scarring or laxity, redness and mild swelling can last 48 to 72 hours. This is not a side effect — it is your skin's healing response activating, which is the mechanism through which microneedling works. We will give you full aftercare guidance including which products are safe to use and when to resume your normal skincare routine.

What should I avoid putting on my skin after microneedling — and why does it matter?

In the 24 to 48 hours following microneedling, the micro-channels created during treatment remain open, meaning anything applied to the skin penetrates at a significantly deeper level than normal. This is why we are very specific about aftercare. You should avoid retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, fragranced products, makeup and any active skincare ingredients during this window, and use only the products we provide you with after your treatment. This is also why home microneedling followed by applying standard skincare products carries genuine risk — products that are safe on intact skin can cause significant reactions when delivered transdermally through open micro-channels.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes — and at Sebastian Rose, combination treatment is where microneedling truly excels. The micro-channels created during treatment dramatically enhance the absorption and effectiveness of clinical-grade actives. Exosomes, PRP, polynucleotides, Sunekos and Botox microinfusion can all be infused during microneedling to produce results that neither treatment alone could achieve. Microneedling also complements injectable treatments such as Profhilo, Sculptra and dermal fillers — though these are typically spaced appropriately and not performed on the same day.

Can microneedling be used on the body and scalp?

Yes. Medical microneedling at Sebastian Rose can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, body and scalp. On the body it is particularly effective for stretch marks and skin laxity. On the scalp, it stimulates blood flow and growth factors in the hair follicles and is particularly effective when combined with PRP or exosomes for hair thinning and hair loss.

Who is not suitable for microneedling?

Microneedling is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for those with active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area, those with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, those currently using isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or who have used it within the last 6 months, or those with certain autoimmune conditions. A full medical consultation is carried out before every treatment at Sebastian Rose to assess suitability.

What is collagen banking and should I start microneedling before I see signs of ageing?

Collagen banking is one of the most talked-about concepts in aesthetic medicine in 2026 — and for good reason. Collagen production begins declining in your mid-twenties, accelerating significantly in your thirties and forties, and dropping by as much as 30% in the first five years of menopause. The principle of collagen banking is simple: begin stimulating collagen production before significant loss occurs, building a reserve that slows the visible signs of ageing and maintains skin quality long term. S

tarting a course of medical microneedling in your twenties or early thirties — when your skin still has good baseline collagen — produces cumulative results that compound over time. Patients who maintain regular microneedling from an earlier age consistently present with better skin quality, smaller pores, improved texture and greater firmness than those who wait until significant ageing has occurred. Prevention is always more effective than correction.

What is skin cycling and how does microneedling fit into it?

Skin cycling — alternating active skincare nights with recovery nights — became one of the most searched skincare terms globally from 2023 onwards and remains hugely popular in 2026. Medical microneedling fits naturally into a skin cycling philosophy: treatment sessions act as the active phase, triggering collagen induction and cellular renewal, while the recovery period between sessions allows the skin to fully heal and remodel before the next stimulus. Your practitioner will advise how to align your home skincare routine with your treatment schedule for maximum results.

What is the difference between a derma stamp, dermaroller and a professional pen device?

Dermarollers use a rolling motion that drags the needle across the skin at an angle, creating a tearing action rather than a clean vertical puncture. This causes more epidermal damage relative to dermal stimulation — meaning more surface trauma and recovery with less clinical benefit. Derma stamps improve on this slightly by using a stamping motion, but still lack the speed, calibration and precision of a professional device. Medical-grade pen devices like Dermapen use an automated stamping motion at precisely controlled speed and depth, creating clean vertical micro-channels with minimal epidermal disruption. The needle tip is sterile and single-use for every patient. The speed — up to thousands of punctures per minute — means the skin is treated consistently and evenly across the entire area, something that cannot be achieved with manual rolling. This is why professional pen devices produce clinical results that home devices simply cannot replicate.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?

Yes — and this is one of the significant advantages of medical microneedling over laser and light-based treatments. Because microneedling is not heat or light-based, it does not carry the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that lasers can cause in darker skin tones. Published research specifically notes that microneedling is particularly safe and well-tolerated in individuals with darker skin types, including for the treatment of acne scarring. At Sebastian Rose, we treat all skin tones and your practitioner will tailor the depth and add-on selection to your specific skin type.

How does microneedling compare to laser resurfacing?

Both microneedling and laser resurfacing stimulate collagen production, but they do so very differently. Laser resurfacing uses heat energy to remove or damage the outer layers of skin, triggering a healing response. It can be highly effective but typically involves significant downtime — sometimes weeks — and carries a higher risk of complications including pigmentation changes, particularly in darker skin tones. Medical microneedling preserves the epidermis while stimulating the dermis — creating collagen induction without ablating the surface. Recovery is significantly shorter, the risk profile is lower, it is safe for all skin tones, and it can be repeated regularly as part of an ongoing maintenance programme. For many patients, a well-designed course of medical microneedling with appropriate add-ons achieves comparable results to more aggressive resurfacing treatments, with far less disruption to daily life.

What trending microneedling treatments do you offer in 2026?

Microneedling with exosomes is one of the most searched aesthetic treatments of 2026 — combining the collagen-inducing effects of microneedling with the regenerative power of exosomal growth factors for accelerated repair and skin transformation. We offer this at Sebastian Rose alongside microneedling with PRP (sometimes called the vampire facial), microneedling with polynucleotides, Botox microinfusion, WOW Fusion 24k gold microneedling, and Sunekos infusion. These combination treatments represent the current leading edge of non-surgical skin regeneration and are available now in Cardiff.
