PRESCRIPTION VITAMIN B12 INJECTIONS CARDIFF
HYDROXOCOBALAMIN — ENERGY, MOOD, HAIR & IMMUNITY RESTORED
At Sebastian Rose in Cardiff, we prescribe and administer hydroxocobalamin — the NICE-recommended, prescription-grade form of Vitamin B12 used by the NHS and GPs across the UK.
This is not a wellness top-up or a beauty salon treatment. It is a prescription medicine, administered by qualified medical practitioners following clinical guidelines.
A medical consultation is mandatory before treatment and must be completed at least 48 hours in advance.
We also offer private blood testing through our London laboratory partner — so you can confirm your B12 levels before beginning treatment and monitor your response over time.

VITAMIN B12 INJECTIONS
Prescription Vitamin B12 Injections Cardiff | Hydroxocobalamin | Sebastian Rose
At Sebastian Rose we prescribe and administer hydroxocobalamin — the same prescription-grade form of Vitamin B12 used by GPs and the NHS, following NICE guidelines and clinical evidence. This is not a wellness supplement or an over-the-counter product. This is a prescription medicine, administered by qualified medical practitioners.
Not all B12 injections are equal. There are several forms of B12 on the market:
Hydroxocobalamin is the NICE-recommended, prescription-only form used by the NHS and qualified medical practitioners. It is longer-lasting, more stable and more effective than synthetic alternatives. This is what we prescribe and administer at Sebastian Rose.
Cyanocobalamin is a cheaper synthetic form widely used in over-the-counter supplements and by many non-medical beauty clinics. It contains a small amount of cyanide which the body must detoxify, is shorter-acting and is not recommended by NICE for clinical use.
Methylcobalamin is another non-prescription form popular in wellness settings, with more limited clinical evidence than hydroxocobalamin for treating true deficiency.
If you have been offered B12 injections at a beauty salon, nail bar or non-medical clinic, it is worth asking what form of B12 they are administering and whether it is being prescribed by a qualified prescriber. At Sebastian Rose you can be certain of exactly what you are receiving and that it meets the same clinical standard as your GP.
VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY — SYMPTOMS, CAUSES & TREATMENT
COULD THIS BE WHAT YOU ARE EXPERIENCING?
B12 Deficiency — Symptoms and Risk Factors
B12 deficiency is more common than most people realise and is frequently missed or misattributed to other causes. Symptoms include persistent fatigue and low energy, brain fog and poor concentration, low mood, anxiety or depression, memory problems, tingling or numbness in hands and feet, poor sleep quality, weakened immune function and hair thinning and loss.
Those most at risk include vegans and vegetarians, people with digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease, coeliac disease or IBS, those taking long-term metformin or proton pump inhibitors, older adults whose ability to absorb B12 through the gut declines naturally with age, those with pernicious anaemia, and anyone with a history of chronic alcohol use.
Why Injections Rather Than Oral Supplements?
Oral B12 supplements rely on a complex absorption pathway in the gut involving a protein called intrinsic factor. Anyone with digestive issues, low stomach acid or a condition affecting the gut may absorb very little from oral supplements regardless of the dose. Intramuscular injection bypasses this entirely, delivering hydroxocobalamin directly into the muscle where it is absorbed immediately and completely. There is simply no better way to correct a genuine B12 deficiency. If you have been taking oral B12 supplements without feeling any improvement, this may be why.
We strongly recommend a private blood test to establish your baseline B12 levels before beginning treatment. This ensures your deficiency is confirmed, allows us to monitor your response to treatment over time and provides a clinical record. We offer fast, professional private blood testing at Sebastian Rose through our London laboratory partner, with results typically within 24 to 48 hours.
Your Treatment Protocol
Following your consultation and confirmation of suitability, your treatment protocol will be tailored to your individual needs and the degree of deficiency identified. If significant deficiency is confirmed via blood test, a loading dose protocol may be recommended in line with NICE guidance — typically more frequent injections over the initial weeks to rapidly restore levels. For maintenance, most patients receive one injection every 2 to 3 months. Your practitioner will advise the most appropriate protocol based on your clinical history, symptoms and blood results.
Take your injection on a day when you can rest if needed — a small number of patients feel tired or mildly unwell in the first 24 hours as their body begins to respond. Most patients notice improvements in energy, concentration and mood within days to a week of their first injection.
Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours afterwards and keep well hydrated.
Important — Consultation Required
As this is a prescription medicine, a medical consultation is mandatory before treatment can proceed. Your consultation must be completed at least 48 hours before your injection appointment. Patients who have not completed a consultation at least 48 hours in advance will not be treated and will forfeit any deposit paid. This is a non-negotiable clinical and legal requirement — not a formality. It ensures your safety and that the treatment is appropriate for you. Your consultation takes approximately 15 minutes and can be completed in person or remotely.

VITAMIN B12 FAQS
Vitamin B12 Injection FAQs
What is the difference between hydroxocobalamin and cyanocobalamin?
Hydroxocobalamin is the NICE-recommended, prescription-only form of B12 used by the NHS. It is more stable, longer-lasting and clinically superior to cyanocobalamin — a cheaper synthetic form widely used in beauty salons and non-medical clinics that contains a small amount of cyanide which the body must detoxify. At Sebastian Rose we only prescribe and administer hydroxocobalamin.
Do I need a blood test before my B12 injection?
We strongly recommend it, but no - you do not have to have one if you choose not to, though we do explain why this is storngly recommended. A private blood test confirms your deficiency, establishes a baseline and allows us to monitor your response to treatment. We offer fast private blood testing at Sebastian Rose with London laboratory analysis and results within 24 to 48 hours. However a blood test is not mandatory to begin treatment if your symptoms and clinical history are consistent with deficiency.
Why can't I just take oral B12 supplements?
Many people do — but if you have a digestive condition, low stomach acid or any gut absorption issue, very little of an oral supplement will actually be absorbed regardless of the dose. Intramuscular injection bypasses the gut entirely for complete, immediate absorption. If oral supplements have not improved your symptoms, injection is almost certainly more appropriate for you.
Is a consultation really necessary?
Yes — absolutely. This is a prescription medicine and a medical consultation is a legal requirement before we can prescribe or administer it. Your consultation must be completed at least 48 hours before your injection appointment. Patients who arrive without having completed their consultation at least 48 hours in advance will not be treated and will forfeit any deposit paid.
How quickly will I feel the effects?
Most patients notice improvements in energy, concentration and mood within days to a week of their first injection. Hair and skin improvements typically develop over 4 to 8 weeks. Patients with more severe or longstanding deficiency may take longer to notice the full benefit.
How often do I need B12 injections?
This depends on your degree of deficiency and individual response. For confirmed significant deficiency, a loading protocol with more frequent injections may be recommended initially. For maintenance, most patients receive one injection every 2 to 3 months.
Is it painful?
The injection is administered into the muscle — most commonly the upper arm or thigh. Most patients describe a brief, mild sting similar to any standard injection. It takes less than a minute.
Can I have B12 injections if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
This will be assessed at consultation. B12 is an essential vitamin and deficiency during pregnancy can have serious consequences — the appropriateness of treatment will be determined by your prescribing practitioner based on your individual circumstances.
