Julaine vs Sculptra: Which Collagen Biostimulator Is Right for You?

Collagen biostimulators have shifted the focus of aesthetic medicine away from simply filling the face and towards rebuilding its foundation. Rather than sitting in the skin as a gel, they prompt your own fibroblasts to lay down new collagen — so the improvement is gradual, natural and rooted in genuine tissue change.
Two names come up most often: Sculptra, the long-established benchmark, and Julaine, a next-generation arrival now available in Cardiff. Both are made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Both stimulate your own collagen. But they are not the same product, and the differences are worth understanding before you choose.

First, what is a collagen biostimulator?
Traditional dermal fillers add volume immediately by injecting a hyaluronic acid gel. A biostimulator does something different. It introduces a material that your body gradually breaks down, and in responding to it, your skin produces fresh Type I collagen — the structural protein responsible for firmness and elasticity.
The result builds over weeks and months rather than appearing on the day, and because it is based on real collagen renewal, it tends to last longer than conventional filler. Neither Sculptra nor Julaine contains hyaluronic acid, so neither gives an instant "filled" look. What they offer is a slow, quiet improvement in skin quality and support.\
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a pure PLLA biostimulator and the most established product in this category, with roughly two decades of clinical use behind it. It works by stimulating collagen through a controlled inflammatory response — your body reacts to the PLLA particles and, as part of that healing process, produces new collagen.
Treatment is typically delivered across a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with results developing progressively and lasting up to around two years. Sculptra's long track record is its greatest strength: the way it behaves, and how to place it safely, are very well understood. Its historical drawback has been the risk of small nodules or papules if the product is placed too superficially or without the correct preparation and massage — a risk that experienced injectors manage through careful technique.
What is Julaine?
Julaine (JULÄINE) is a newer pure PLLA biostimulator developed and manufactured in Sweden by Nordberg Medical. It uses proprietary LaSynPro technology — Lactic Acid Induced Synthesis of Collagen Protein — which produces PLLA microspheres that are highly uniform in size and shape.
That uniformity is the point of difference. Evenly sized particles are designed to distribute more predictably in the tissue and integrate smoothly, with the aim of reducing clumping and the palpable nodules occasionally associated with older PLLA products. Julaine is also described as working through a lower-inflammatory mechanism than Sculptra, activating fibroblasts more directly rather than relying as heavily on an inflammatory reaction.
Like all PLLA products, it delivers no immediate volume — there is no visible change on the day. Collagen builds gradually over the following weeks and months.
The key differences at a glance
Julaine | Sculptra | |
Material | Pure PLLA (LaSynPro microspheres) | Pure PLLA |
Manufacturer | Nordberg Medical (Sweden) | Galderma |
Microsphere profile | Highly uniform, engineered for even distribution | Effective, less uniform particle size |
Mechanism | Lower-inflammatory, direct fibroblast activation | Collagen driven via inflammatory response |
Track record | Next-generation; emerging clinical data | ~20 years of established use |
Immediate volume | None — gradual collagen build | None — gradual collagen build |
Results appear | Over weeks to months | Over weeks to months |
So which is better?
Honestly, this is less "better versus worse" and more "established versus refined."
Sculptra earns its place through experience. Two decades of clinical use mean its behaviour is thoroughly mapped, and in skilled hands it produces reliable, long-lasting results. If you value a product with the longest possible evidence base, that matters.
Julaine represents a genuine step forward in how PLLA is manufactured, and its uniform-microsphere, lower-inflammatory approach is a sensible response to the one recurring criticism of older biostimulators. It's important to be straight about the evidence, though: Julaine is new, and its published clinical data is still early — the current safety and efficacy results come from small interim studies rather than large head-to-head trials against Sculptra. The mechanism and manufacturing logic are sound; the long-term comparative data is still being built.
For most patients, the deciding factor isn't the brand — it's the assessment. The right product, plane and dose for your skin matter far more than which name is on the vial.
Julaine in Cardiff at Sebastian Rose
Sebastian Rose is among the first clinics in Cardiff and South Wales to offer Julaine. As a nurse-led, medically-focused clinic, every biostimulator treatment starts with a full assessment of your skin, your goals and your suitability — because with PLLA, technique and planning are everything.
Whether Julaine or Sculptra is the better fit depends on your skin, your priorities and your history. We'll talk you through both honestly at consultation, with no pressure and no promises we can't stand behind.
Frequently asked questions
Is Julaine a filler? No. It's a collagen biostimulator. It doesn't add instant volume — it prompts your own skin to produce new collagen gradually.
Will I see results straight away? No. Neither Julaine nor Sculptra gives same-day volume. Improvement builds over weeks to months as new collagen forms.
How long do results last? Biostimulator results tend to be long-lasting because they're based on genuine collagen renewal. Sculptra results can last up to around two years; Julaine's longevity data is still maturing but is expected to be comparable.
Is it safe? PLLA is biocompatible and fully absorbable — the same material used in dissolvable surgical sutures. As with any injectable, safety depends heavily on correct technique and assessment, which is why nurse-led treatment matters.
How many sessions will I need? This is determined at consultation, based on your skin and goals. Biostimulators are usually delivered as a short course rather than a single treatment.
Not sure whether Julaine or Sculptra is right for you? Book a consultation with our nurse prescriber and we'll assess your skin and talk you through your options.
