MOISTURISERS

The step everyone gets wrong.

Most people buy a moisturiser for a skin type they don't have — and then blame their serum when nothing works.

Ceramide night creams, barrier repair, oil-free hydration and post-treatment recovery - matched properly.

A moisturiser doesn't just hydrate. It decides whether the actives underneath it are tolerable — which is why choosing the right one matters more than choosing the expensive one.

There is no step in skincare where more money is wasted, and none where the right choice makes a bigger difference to whether everything else works.

DRY SKIN AND DEHYDRATED SKIN ARE NOT THE SAME THING

This is the single most useful distinction in skincare, and almost nobody is taught it.

Dry skin is a skin type. It lacks oil. It feels rough rather than tight, it flakes, and it needs lipids — ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol — to replace what it isn't producing.

Dehydrated skin is a condition. It lacks water. It feels tight, looks dull and flat, fine lines look worse by the end of the day, and it happens to oily skin just as readily as dry. It needs humectants — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol — and something over the top to stop that water evaporating again.

Most people who describe their skin as dry are dehydrated, reach for a heavier cream, and find it does nothing except sit there. If your skin is oily but tight, you are dehydrated, and a rich moisturiser is the wrong answer.

THE BARRIER IS WHY YOUR ACTIVES ARE IRRITATING YOU

Your skin barrier is a lipid matrix holding the outer cells together. When it's intact, water stays in and irritants stay out. When it's compromised — by over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, cold weather, or an active introduced too fast — everything you apply stings, and the retinoid you were tolerating last month suddenly isn't.

This is the part people miss. When a routine stops being tolerable, the usual instinct is to stop the active. Far more often, the answer is to repair the barrier and keep going.

Ceramides do this properly, but only in the right proportions. Medik8's Advanced Night Restore uses ceramides 1 and 3 with phytosterol and fatty acids in a 3:1:1:1 ratio, based on published research showing that specific combination accelerates barrier recovery. That is a meaningfully different thing from a cream that lists ceramides on the front and includes a trace.

DAY AND NIGHT ARE DIFFERENT JOBS

In the morning, a moisturiser protects — it sits under SPF, it shouldn't pill, and for most people it should be lighter than they think.

At night, skin loses water faster and repairs more actively, which is when a richer, lipid-replenishing cream earns its place. It is also when it does its most useful work: applied after vitamin A, a proper night cream is what makes a retinoid routine sustainable over years rather than weeks.

If you buy one moisturiser, buy the night one.

AFTER TREATMENT, YOU NEED SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY

Skin that has just had a peel, microneedling or laser has a deliberately compromised barrier. It doesn't need actives, it doesn't need your usual cream, and it certainly doesn't need anything with fragrance or acids in it. It needs occlusion and calm — a rich, restorative formula that locks moisture in and keeps irritants out while it heals.

We'll tell you exactly what to use and when at your appointment. Getting this wrong is the most common reason people are disappointed with in-clinic results.
